Bring a piece of nature in to your home! Here are my favourite houseplants. They are easy to look after and very beautiful!
Peace lily - I have two huge peace lilies (growing in the same pot) with big, banana-like leaves and unusual white flowers. They like their shady room, and when they need water, their leaf-stems flop. I also have some much smaller ones in a pot and they don't really flower.
Spider plant - I have one spider plant that I grew from a baby off my grandparents' plant. They have green strappy leaves striped with white. They are a pretty 'fail-safe' plant and they produce loads of little baby spider plants off their stems!
Calathea - I think calatheas are related to bananas. I have several growing in different pots. They do not demand very much light and they will wilt if they need more moisture or humidity.
Aloe vera - A cactus-like plant related to daylilies. They require hardly any water, and the leaves have medicinal properties.
'Love heart' plant - I don't know the actual name of this plant (although it might be valentine Hoya), It's basically one love heart shaped leaf. We have one that grows in an old mug in our bathroom. Back in December/January I realised she hadn't had any water since September! It looked fine but of course I gave it some water.
Snake plant - Somewhere I heard this plant being called 'rough and tough'. Ours need little water or light. I have heard you can make paintbrushes from the leaves!
Orchids - When orchids need water, their roots turn white. I have one growing in a glass container (so I can see the roots) in special orchid bark (I shamefully admit I used to have her growing in peat-free compost). Since she has moved to bark (still no peat - yay!) her roots have stayed nice and green (although at times I have still given her a little water). I also have a vanilla orchid I got for Christmas.
